Fast track service for Gippsland and Grampians

A fast-track service for resolving consumer disputes is expanding to Gippsland and the Grampians later this month. 

VCAT and the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria are expanding the Fast Track MediationDefinitionMediations are confidential meetings where parties discuss ways to resolve their dispute, with the help of an impartial mediator. and HearingDefinitionThe time and place at which VCAT hears the parties argue their case and makes a decision. service for eligible disputes up to $5000, making it a state-wide service.

The service involves mediators from both VCAT and DSCV helping people with goods and services disputes reach agreement through mediationDefinitionMediations are confidential meetings where parties discuss ways to resolve their dispute, with the help of an impartial mediator. . If they can't reach agreement, the matter goes to a hearingDefinitionThe time and place at which VCAT hears the parties argue their case and makes a decision. on the same day.  

From Thursday 24 October, mediations will be held at the Morwell Justice Service Centre, 25 Ann Street, Morwell. Hearings will be at LaTrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court (about four minutes’ walk from the Justice Centre).

From Wednesday 30 October, both mediations and hearings will be conducted at Ballarat Magistrates’ Court.

The Fast Track Mediation and Hearing service is now available in Melbourne, Geelong (Barwon South West region), Warrnambool (South West), Shepparton (Hume) and Bendigo (Loddon Mallee). 

It delivers on Access to Justice Review recommendations, to increase access to alternative dispute resolution for small civil claims.
