New VCAT venue for Oakleigh

A new VCAT venue is set to open in Oakleigh in late February 2020.

This initiative by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and Court Services Victoria aims to improve access to justice for the local community.

Two levels of an existing building at 20 Atherton Road, Oakleigh, are being fitted out for mediations and hearings.

About the venue

Informed by human centred design, we're creating an environment that is welcoming to people using our services and less formal than a courthouse.

The new venue will feature:

  • mediation and hearing rooms that are culturally appropriate for Koories
  • technology to support digital evidence presentation and video conferencing
  • remote witness facilities
  • space for support services.

VCAT will initially use the venue to help Victorians with renting, goods and services, and guardianship cases. We expect to expand this to other types of cases in future.

It's part of a plan

This is part of a strategic plan to establish several dedicated VCAT venues in metropolitan Melbourne. When the new venue opens, VCAT will no longer hold hearings at the Moorabbin Justice Centre and Springvale Council Chambers.
