Regional Victorians to benefit from expanded mediation service

We are bringing fast track mediation and hearing service to the Barwon South West region.

From 22 Feb 2018, people in Barwon South West will have access to fast track mediation and hearing service for goods and services disputes under $5000. 

This is a first step towards giving regional Victorians better access to mediationDefinitionMediations are confidential meetings where parties discuss ways to resolve their dispute, with the help of an impartial mediator. for everyday consumer disputes.

With our partners at the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria, we are initially offering this fast track mediation and hearing service in Geelong once a month, and plan to add services at Warrnambool from late March 2018. 

We have also expanded this service in central Melbourne from three to five days a week from 5 February 2018.

These changes are part of a four-year expansion program, which will see the service extend across regional Victoria and a gradual increase in the monetary limit up to $15,000.

Victoria’s Access to Justice Review in October 2016 recommended expansion of our alternative dispute resolution services for civil disputes. The Victorian Government is supporting this expansion with $6.26 million over four years to the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria.
